Great Value and Great Product July 28, 2010 Michelle We purchased this set for our 16 year old daughter for Photography Class in High School. She has had so much fun with it and has taken some truely amazing photos which will be hanging in our house in the very near future. We look forward to what else she learns to do with this camera. The bag is the perfect size. Now she wants to start getting more gadgets for her camera. This was the best deal we found, and we searched for several weeks at a lot of different sites and stores.
Good quality and capability July 12, 2010 Ari Heinze (Tucson, AZ United States) I used to love my film SLR, but it got old and developed
glitches, so I switched to a digital point-and-shoot
5 years ago to save film costs. But I missed having a really
capable camera, and looked for digital SLR prices to get low
enough. Now they have, and I'm really pleased with my choice
of the Nikon D3000 with 18-55 and 55-200 mm zoom lenses.
I've used it for family outings, wildlife photography, sky/landscape,
and everything else I've thought of. It's really easy to master for
someone already familiar with a film SLR and a digital point-and-shoot.
At low film speed the image sharpness is near the Nyquist limit
(theoretical perfection), which proves the lens optics and the
autofocus work well. Higher film speeds show more grain, but still
offer great flexibility for getting good pictures in low light.
The 200mm lens needs a tripod for optimum sharpness on exposures
longer than 1/300 sec. JPEG compression blurs the images slightly,
so use the Raw format and then convert to TIFF for highest quality.
The autofocus is almost as fast as manual, and at least as dependable.
The option of manually picking what point or set of
points the autofocus will use is really nice. The frame size for
the 200mm lens is equivalent to a 300mm lens on a 35mm film camera,
which makes it feel like a quite long telephoto -- great for wildlife.
I've only found two real disadvantages besides the obvious (i.e. there's
no live view, there's no movie mode, and being an SLR it won't fit in
your pocket). One is that the camera is light and mostly made of plastic,
so I think hits that my old film SLR shrugged off would probably
destroy it -- a real concern for someone who hikes and rock climbs
with a camera. The other is that the flash is weak and the flash
duration seems to be about 1/300 sec -- way too long to freeze fast
motion. I might buy a more powerful external flash before too long.
But it's still a great camera, and this kit in particular is really
good value for the money.
Nikon D3000 Digital SLR Camera June 28, 2010 Kerry (MENTOR, OH, US) This is a great deal for this package!!! I shopped around for at least 6 months and no-one could come anywhere close to the price I paid for all I received in this purchase. I had no problems whatsoever in the ordering, paying, shipping or receiving process of this order. I am loving my new camera package and am learning how to use different features. I would recommend to anyone looking to purchase an SLR digital to consider this package.
Great Hobby Camera May 27, 2010 WyoKan87 The Nikon D3000 is a great hobby camera for individuals who are wanting much more then just a point and shoot, yet are not wanting to spend an excessive amount of money. I have had great success so far in shooting a wide variety of subjects.
The only thing that I did not really like is that I have had to play with the settings quite a bit to keep the background from being blacked out in low light shooting. When using the Auto or Guide modes in low light it shoots quite dark.
I was happy with the package, as I did not have Nikon lenses, and the second lens included really gave me a better range. The included bag was very nice too. The included memory card reader was faulty, however the seller shipped a replacement the day after I informed them I was having trouble with it, and I have had no problems with it.
camera review May 10, 2010 R. Graham (NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was a little skeptical buying such an expensive item thru amazon.com from a company I had never heard of, but I am very happy with my purchase. The products work great, I love my camera and all the other items that came with it. I think I got a pretty good deal! :)
